Granite & Marble

GRANITE

A million years ago, a molten flow of lava crusaded towards the surface of the earth, gathering Quartz, Mica and Feldspar along the way. That pressurized lava cooled, dried and hardened, becoming a solid mass of rock.

Granite is a composite with it’s unique qualities emerging due to the minerals it encountered en route, and the speed of the movement towards the surface. Typically the faster the flow of the magma, the tighter the grain structure in the granite.

Each different granite in our yard has different percentages of quartz, mica and feldspar, and this produces the different colours, reflective properties, and grain characteristics of each stone. From the mirror finish on a piece of Absolute Black, to the wood grain on a slab of Cosmic Black, surface fissures on a slab of Giallo Ornamental, to the tiny surface pits on a slab of Coffee Brown. All different, all natural, all beautiful!

MARBLE

Even older than granite, Marble, a metamorphic stone, started life millions of years ago as limestone from sedimentary deposits that over time experienced tremendous heat and movement. With the accumulation of new minerals it morphed to create the product we know as Marble.

Marble has very different performance characteristics, and although we do use it in the occasional kitchen, primarily Bianca Carrera Marble, it is best suited in bathrooms for countertops, shower cladding and tub decks. The stones are much softer, more absorbent and easier to scratch and etch than either granite or quartz.
